Is home birth safe?
The current research says that home birth is a safe birthing option for low-risk pregnancies. For more information on the safety of home birth, please explore the latest research on Home Birth Safety Outcomes.
Can my older children be present at my birth?
Absolutely! This is your birth and you get to choose who you want present. Throughout your care, we will talk about who is on your birth team and how we can best work together to create the best birthing environment for you. We encourage you to bring any older children to at least one prenatal visit so they can get familiar with me and we can include them in your prenatal care.
Can I have a homebirth if I live in a small space?
Yes! You do not need very much space at all for your baby to be born. In fact, even in large houses, most people end up staying in a rather small area once labor gets rolling. We’ve caught babies in tiny little bathrooms, closets, backyard patios, backyard teepees, and pretty much anywhere else you can think of.
How messy is home birth?
We can almost guarantee you that home birth is much less messy than what you’re picturing in your head! Midwives are pros at protecting your space. When it’s all said and done and we tuck you into bed with your new baby, you will not be able to tell that a birth took place in your home. We will clean it all up and put everything back the way it was.
What do you do in the event of an emergency?
Though we do our best to avoid emergent situations by thorough and continuous risk assessment, there is always the potential for an unforeseen emergent circumstance to arise. If transport is necessary, we will send your medical records to the hospital so that they have a full picture of your care up to that point. We will also call ahead to Labor & Delivery and give them report so they are ready to receive you. We will remain a support to you once you have transferred (the level of this support ranges from phone & text support to in-person support depending on current COVID restrictions at the local hospitals).
Will you be the only midwife at my birth?
We never work alone. The best home birth outcomes rely on enough hands to be able to safely and effectively care for both the birthing person and the baby if they both need medical attention at the same time. At a minimum, we will have one midwife and one other birth assistant present. We are huge fans of collaborative care - this allows us to be our best for YOU. I (Morgann) work alongside Che Phifer, CPM LM who operates Agape Blooming Midwifery. You will likely meet her at some point during your care so that you are familiar with my backup midwife.
